CAPTAIN DAVID APPLETON

 

TEACHING and PROJECT MANAGEMENT:

 

Captain David Appleton has thousands of hours of classroom teaching experience both as a sailing instructor and, for  more than 16 years, as an Assistant Professor of English, Speech and Theatre in several colleges and universities from South  Carolina (USC) to Michigan (NMU).  And hes had even more organizational and project oriented managerial experiences as a theatrical director, with more than 40 shows as director/producer, and more as designer and actor. David also produced and directed several street plays, troubadors and historical "street characters" for Philadelphia '76, Inc. for the city's Bicentenia celebration.l  Hes sailed all his life, but most intensely for the last 30 years, and professionally since 1992.

 

SAILING SCHOOLS:

 

Since 1993 David has been closely associated with leading American Sailing Association facilities as a senior instructor and he is now an ASA Instructor Evaluator and ASA Facility Evaluator.. He skippered more than 48,000 nautical miles teaching advanced ASA classes on Coastwise and Ocean passages (see ASA Advanced Training Voyages) for several schools including:

Maryland School of Sailing and Seamanship, http://www.mdschool.com/, as a leading instructor Since 1993, teaching all ASA levels and leading voyages from in and around the Chesapeake Bay and the Bahamas, Bermuda, Long Island Sound and New England, to St. Thomas, USVI, and as far as Trinidad.   He has served as Head Instructor for the prestigious Maryland School, responsible for recruiting, training and assigning fellow Instructors.

New Jersey Sailing School, http://www.newjerseysailingschool.com/, teaching ASA classes from beginning (101) to advanced (106) including Long Island Circumnavigations.

He also taught ASA sailing Classes for Liberty Sailing School in Philadelphia, Sunsail in Annapolis,  and Island Yachts in St. Thomas, USVI.

And in a previous life, in the early '80s while teaching Theatre at High Point College in NC, he also taught basic sailing for the City of High Point Recreation Department as Vice Commodore for Education with the Oak Hollow Yacht Club.

AMI Personalized Workshops - David has developed and provided workshops for many yacht clubs in areas such as safety, boat handling, navigation, voyage preparation, and ocean passage making.

YACHT CLUBS:

 

David has been a member of, raced with, and served on the bridge of several yacht clubs in South Carolina, North Carolina, and Pennsylvania.

As the Vice Commodore of the Oak Hollow Yacht Club in North Carolina, he organized, supervised and taught in the Sailing Instruction program for the city of High Point, NC.

He's been active in Club Racing in various boats with High Rock Yacht Club, Lake Townsend Yacht Club, and Oak Hollow Yacht Club, all in North Carolina, and the Delaware River Yacht Club in Philadelphia, PA.

And as Fleet Captain for the Delaware River Yacht Club he organized and led club cruises on the Delaware and Chesapeake Bays, and in the near coastal areas off Cape May, NJ.

 

OCEAN VOYAGING:

 

David has more than 100,000 nm of ocean and near coastal offshore experience as captain of vessels under 70 in the waters of the North Atlantic and Caribbean from Nova Scotia to Trinidad and accross the Gulf of Mexico from Key West and Pennsecola to Galveston and Corpis Christie (see Representative Voyages).

In the US Navy David logged Sea Duty  of 25,000+ nm ocean experience as an enlisted petty officer on  US Navy vessels  in the North Atlantic, Arctic, Mediterranean, Caribbean between 1964 and 1967.  He served at sea on USS COURTNEY (DE 1021) as Boatswains Mate/Gunners Mate and USS NANTAHALA (AO 60) as Lead Fire Control Tech., FTG3.
