Pictured are a Blackpoll Warbler and Captain David Appleton. The photo was taken October 28, 1993 (Local Noon) in the Atlantic Ocean (AP - N 27°10' W 64°50').
The occasion was taking noon Sunday shot for our daily fix, en route from Rock Hall, Maryland to St. Thomas, USVI, delivering "Segue", AMI's charter boat, a Packet Cat 35, to the Island Yacht fleet in Red Hook.
About 7 days out of Beaufort, NC (about 830 nautical miles East of Miami and 960 nm South of Nova Scotia) four of these birds joined us after some fairly rough weather (30+ winds and 15+ seas). This one seemed intent to know his precise location. Several months later we read of the Blackpoll Warbler's annual migratory flight from Nova Scotia to South America in Smithsonian (4/94, pp. 16-20), and were awestruck. Our 'rough' passage seemed rather comfortable and unambitious in comparison.
